WHO can do these SUP Eco-Tours?
- Anyone who is proficient in SUP and confident of paddling these stated distances are most welcome to participate. You can be living in Singapore or a tourist visiting Singapore.
- For people who live in Singapore: You must have done at least one SUP Lesson with me (we don't recognise some SUP schools here because we know their teaching is not up to standard, but please be honest with us).
- We will assess your level of competency and whether or not you could join these; because if you really cannot paddle the distance, just imagine what's gonna happen?
- Once we assess your SUP competency, we might recommend if you need x number of trainings to improve your techniques so as to be able to paddle x km. Please understand that if paddling techniques are incorrect, one cannot paddle mileage and reach a minimum speed or recommended average board speed.
- All are required to be able to paddle the distance of the Itinerary you've selected at an average board speed of 5km/hr.
I've not done this mileage before, how do I train myself up for it?
No worries, Rachel can get you mileage-fit for these tours. 1 hr SUP Trainings are available.
But...before you proceed, please be Aware of these Safety Guidelines that we adhere to, VERY STRICTLY. If your ego is bigger than your safety, we won't take you.
- Crossing the Shipping Channel: There are ships, containers, oil rigs and all sizes/speeds of powerboats crossing the channel from Both Right and Left all the time. It takes good judgement and experience to gauge the time/distance of approaching ships which could come from BOTH directions at the same time. Always stay close to me and paddle close together (can be heard audibly). SUP competency is necessary not during the lazy paddling around the kelongs but at the crossing. Falling off the board with the ship approaching is not funny, you don't want to be our only fatal statistic. The ships don't give way to us, we need to give way to them. SUP competency will more or less ensure a confidence to "Stay Calm and Paddle On" with approaching vessels, ocean swells and fishing boats.
- Even if you're an Olympian but never SUP b4 doesn't mean you can do a Tour at your first try.
- Vessels don't even look like they're moving when they're travelling, so please trust my instructor's judgement. When in doubt, hold back instead of rushing to cross the channel.
What you should wear and bring?
- Comfortable Sports wear such as Rashies and board shorts and since it's really hot out there, we recommend maximum protection but it's really up to you, even bikinis and bare-bodies are cool
- Hats and Sunglasses - Hydration backpacks or Waterproof bags (place your water bottles inside); minimum 1 litre of water
- Slap on lots of sunscreen before you proceed
- Bring some cash along as you might want to consume drinks or a meal at the Kelong
Other FAQ
1) How much do I pay if I have my own SUP Board?
You will save on board rental at Ohana
2) How do you assess my SUP competency and proficiency?
Simple. Email over some GPS photos of proof or videos of your paddling. Or some form of "Proof". We will be able to see if you're paddling with the right techniques. For students who've taken lessons from us, we would be able to assess or recommend self-training to get you ready for the SUP Eco-Tour. Please understand that we're not judging your competency level, we just want to ensure that you can complete the Tour without accident/incident and with maximum enjoyment. Similar to climbing certain mountains, there're certain physical fitness levels required. It's the same with our SUP Tours.
3) What if I don't have a waterproof bag?
I can lend you one. Do bring at least 1 litre of water (in a few water bottles) and keep them in the bag.
4) Can I still go if I've not paddled this distance before?
Yes, you can. If you can paddle 80% of the itinerary you like, you can go for it. Reason is because it's so beautiful out there, you don't even feel like you're paddling that far. The scenery will distract you from the mileage. In addition, the water-breaks will ensure you have some rest during the journey. But if you've never paddled this distance, and only touched water once, probably not. Arrange for a lesson with Rachel.
5) I will take photos for your Tour and you're most welcome to take your own photos/videos. Please ensure that your camera/mobile phone is waterproof or has a waterproof case. We're not responsible for any damage.
