Parent-coaching

Parents need coaching?

I'm 40 years old and I've 2 children: 4 and 8. My daughter, Victoria is 4 and Samuel is 8 (Pri 2). My Homepage explains a little about my sports background and my current business. Being a parent myself, I'm very passionate about the process of parenting, after all, we chat with friends/fellow moms about our kids, almost all the time, isn't it? 'Most' of us are interested in parenting and want to learn how to bring up our children to be self-motivated individuals, compassionate, independent, brave, kind and (hopefully-don't we all?) succeed in life. Nope, I'm not referring to becoming a 'kiasu' and 'kiasi' parent, neither do I completely embrace the other extreme school of thought of the 'western' way is the only adventurous and cool way. We must never forget our asian and chinese culture and roots yet we must continually widen our minds and teach our children to be fearless, yet disciplined (typical chinese) and empathetic! We focus on good character development and once that's taken care of, the rest will take care of itself. My parenting method is simply one that moves us forward in this clash of civilisations, between east and west, tradition and modernity. Note that modernity does not mean total freedom.
The parents who know that they have questions to ask are on the right track. Those who think they have it all but their kids are not heading in the right track, are in trouble themselves. It's all down to understand how to parent our children in the most holistic way via unstructured play, sports, art/culture, travelling and the mundane everyday moments. Finding 'Teachable Moments' are not hard, one needs to learn to recognise one. One of the most common things I've heard parents ask is how can they help to make their child self-motivated? Or you're a parent and you're tired, need a little 'lift-me-up' chat over coffee, energy-infuser session and re-discover your purpose in parenting again? Or via emails, chats etc...

our way of bringing up kids

I'm NOT a better mom than you! I'm also not self-declared successful mom. I just want to present my alternative way of parenting that works for us and many have told me that Samuel, at 8 years old, has done more in his 8 years than many adults at 50 years old. It's not in what he can do but it's the mindset in a child that I aim to nurture into an independent, self-motivated, brave and useful adult. We are not putting down the importance of studies in SG, we believe in bringing up kids in a child-led way, exposing them to AS MANY things/countries/cultures/sports as possible so they grow up with a passion for life. We want them excited, hungry to play, self-motivated, upright, purposeful, compassionate and choose their road in life and travel the road less travelled. No, not more tuition, enrichment, structured activities or more adults telling them what to do.

We bring them on travels as much as possible, and indulge most of our time outdoors/nature, sports, hanging out, playing and whatever homework/exams there are, we work our hardest too. But we'll never stop the sports and play to replace with enrichment classes and tuition. The priority of childhood is play above studies and we believe that when a child is truly happy playing, he develops the natural intelligence and the self-motivation and drive to want to excel in studies, without the excess enrichment/tuition.

a LITTLE MORE ABOUT 8 YO SAMUEL JOSH

Samuel is 8 years old and in Primary 2 this year. He does well academically in school, and has such a wide, varied interest in many things that he's very purposefully busy. He loves all that he does and knows what he wants to achieve (short and long-term), not everything is for competition but he doesnt mind putting in hard work to get his desired results. He is training in Swimming (medallist), Gymnastics and Sailing. He plays contemporary Drums (fav song is 21 Guns), plays Speedcubes and takes part in Cube competitions in SG. His favourite events are 2x2, 3x3 and Pyraminx. He meddles with 4x4, Inequilateral and all sorts of shape-shifter cubes (I think we have almost 50 cubes).  See his first competition results and ranking on World Cube Association; his best solve is 7.05s in 2x2, 14.7s in Pyraminx and 53.09s in 3x3 as well as Inequilateral Cube solve. He loves surfing (goes Bali to surf twice a year), snowboarding (once a year at Christmas), wake boarding, Stand Up Paddling (won several Gold medals), running, skateboarding and skate-scooter (Skatepark). He also trains for Dragon & Lion Dance performances and competitions with his Troupe. He's so full of energy and enjoys varied hobbies, all these build up his spontaneity and cause him to be self-motivated and have a high self-esteem. He has a strong sense of purpose in life and knows how to put in the effort to achieve his personal goals.
